Fall is one of the most beautiful times to enjoy the natural landscapes of Charles County. Our parks burst with
colorful foliage, cooler breezes, and abundant wildlife – ideal for walking, biking, paddling, or simply unwinding
outdoors. With scenic trails at places like Gilbert Run Park, Laurel Springs, Pisgah Park, and Port Tobacco River
Park, there are endless opportunities for peaceful strolls, energizing hikes, and family adventures. Whether you're
exploring the Indian Head Rail Trail, spotting wildlife along wooded paths, or taking in waterfront views at Mallows
Bay or Friendship Farm Park, our parks offer a refreshing escape all season long.
As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, parks and recreation take on an even more meaningful role throughout
Charles County. Autumn invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor the simple pleasures of nature’s
seasonal display. Studies show that 92% of U.S. adults feel a boost in mood and energy after visiting local parks,
and 93% say park programs support their mental health. Recreation programs further strengthen community well
being by giving residents of all ages opportunities to learn new skills, stay active, meet new people, and build
confidence in a fun, supportive environment. These offerings also contribute to the local economy by supporting
jobs and attracting visitors through programs, events, and tourism. And with every dollar invested in parks returning
about three dollars in community benefits, parks and recreation remains one of the smartest and most reliable
investments we can make for a healthier, happier Charles County.
As we enjoy these outdoor spaces today, we are also planning for the future. This fall, we will be finalizing our 2027
Land Preservation, Parks, and Recreation Plan, a state mandated plan which enables eligibility for Maryland's
Program Open Space development and acquistion funds. Additionally, we will embark on our first Departmental
Master Plan to "Reimagine Our Spaces for 2050" to further plan for the future of parks and recreation in Charles
County. We continue to invest in new facilities and improvements that will expand recreational opportunities, creating
welcoming, accessible spaces that enhance the quality of life for our community and for generations to come.
Our fall special events calendar is packed with new favorites! Our Sensory Friendly Movie Night features a familyfriendly movie in a calm and welcoming environment designed to support a variety of sensory needs. Set sail for
Captain Ethan’s Pirate Party, complete with treasure hunts, crafts, and swashbuckling photo opportunities. Young
explorers can discover prehistoric fun at Party Like a Dino, filled with dinosaur themed crafts, scavenger hunts,
and imaginative activities. And if you’re ready to celebrate the season, join us for Scarecrow Making & Pumpkin
Carving, where families can create festive autumn décor with provided supplies.
For adults, we’re excited to offer energizing fitness classes like Rebound Fitness, RhyDem Fitness, and Strong Nation,
along with dance programs ranging from Hand Dance to Adult Jazz. If you’re hoping to expand your culinary
skills, our Charcuterie Board Workshop and Date Night Cuisine classes provide flavorful, hands on learning with
plenty of delicious results.
Sports lovers will find no shortage of ways to stay active this fall. Compete and connect through our Adult Pickleball
Ladder League, Adult Co Ed Volleyball League, or Indoor Soccer League. Younger athletes can build skills and
confidence in programs such as the Co Ed Soccer Skills Academy, Basketball Skills Academy, or our always popular
Kickball Program – all designed to encourage teamwork and promote a lifelong love of movement.
Autumn in Charles County also brings a wonderful sense of discovery. Explore historic sites like the Port Tobacco
Historic Village and the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House, savor the comforting seasonal flavors featured at local eateries,
or immerse yourself in beloved traditions such as the Charles County Fair, a celebration of our region’s agricultural
heritage. And don’t miss the return of the Mixtape Concert Series, delivering high energy performances for an
unforgettable evening of music and community fun.
